The Lowry is a magnificent waterside art gallery set in the heart of redeveloped Salford Quays in Greater Manchester. The Lowry is triangular in shape with a distinctive and unusual combination of stainless steel and glasswork. It is located on what once was Pier 8, with the Manchester Ship Canal still lying on either sides of its triangular site.
The spectacular Lifting Footbridge across the canal links the Lowry to Trafford Wharfside, Manchester United Football Club and the Imperial War Museum. The interior of the Lowry has an area larger than 5 football pitches.
The Lowry offers a wide variety of performances and visual arts under its roof. The Lowry has two theatres for performing arts. Here you can experience a full range of drama, opera, ballet, dance, musicals, children's shows, popular music, jazz, folk and comedy.
Great works of L S Lowry are also housed at the Lowry. These pictures have been transferred from its original home at Salford Art Gallery, which began collecting his work in the 1930s. The L S Lowry Collection now boasts of about 350 paintings and drawings from Lowry's artistic career.
Apart from this, The Lowry also houses other collections. These pictures, loaned from other public and private collections are displayed at thematic exhibitions. The Lowry has a ship-like appearance, from the outside, especially when viewed from across the canal. This marine feeling is transmitted even when you walk inside the Lowry, where the stairways and landings resemble ships' gangways.
