Liverpool football club

Football is a passion in Britain and Liverpool is no exception. With 100 years of existence, no English club can match the Liverpool football club's roll of honour: League Champions 18 times, FA Cup winners six times, League Cup winners seven times, European Cup winners four times and UEFA Cup winners three times.

All the credit goes to John Houlding who stayed after a dispute over rent with Anfield, in 1892, with a handful of supporters and just three first-team players. With staunch determination, he formed a new club from scratch, chose the name Liverpool and created a legend.

The first league play at Anfield was in 1888, where the 'Blues' of Everton football club played against the Accrington. With amateur players, the club slowly started emerging into its own and later reached the hallmark as one of the best soccer teams of UK. From then, the fledging Everton played many games and finally settled in Anfield.

John Houlding is the man behind the formation of the Liverpool Football Club. With his astute guidance, the team prospered and became financially sound. A brewer by profession, Houlding was the Mayor of Liverpool and he shifted Everton from Stanley Park to Anfield. Today you will find his fine oil portrait hanging within the Liverpool club museum and also a bronze plaque outside Directors' Lounge in Anfield.

Subsequently, the Liverpool club started playing many league matches and at last reached the FA cup finals in 1950, which took place in Wembeley. This match is a landmark in the history of Liverpool football club with immense demand for the Liverpool FC ticket. The Liverpool football club received over a million applicants for just 10,000 tickets. Though Liverpool FC lost the match to Arsenal, they were warmly received by the Liverpool fans for their successful entry in to the finals.

From then, Liverpool football went on to achieve greater heights and started winning many league matches. Yet the FA cup remained out of reach. At last after 73 years, the Liverpool FC clinched the FA cup in May 1965. This took the Liverpool football club to greater heights.

The FC club of Liverpool cannot forget the incident, which killed at least 40 Liverpool football fans on May 29, 1985. Liverpool was playing against the Juventus in the European cup finals at the Heysel stadium, Brussels. An hour before the scheduled kick-off, tempers became frayed between both sets of fans. They baited each other through a segregating fence made of chicken wire.

As the Reds moved towards victory, Liverpool fans charged towards their Italian counterparts and chaos reigned. As a result, Juvetus fans fled. A wall blocking their escape collapsed on top of them and thirty-nine football supporters died where they fell. The Liverpool football club also witnessed another disaster in 1989, during the FA semi-final match against Nottingham forest in Hillsborough.

Atleast 96 Liverpool football fans were crushed to death thus leaving the club shaken. Even today you can find the Hillsborough memorial alongside the Shankly Gates at Anfield, decorated with flowers and other tributes to those 96 fans. The eternal flame, which keeps burning at the centre of the memorial, signifies that they will never be forgotten.
